How important...

... do you suppose the 'desirable' criteria in a person specification are? I rather imagine that it's not actually worth applying for something unless you meet the 'desirable' as well as the 'essential' criteria, on the basis that if you don't, they're likely to be able to find another applicant who does.

Of course many person specifications are so vague that I wouldn't know if I did meet their criteria...

Not very. Companies often specify things in their essential, (let alone desirable) characteristics that they're not expecting to get. Or at least a combination they're not expecting to get. They figure, why not aim high, and it's the person who doesn't satisfy the descriptions which then has the ability to show them they 're wrong.
